Interview with Candre

Thank you so much for joining us! Can you tell us a story about what brought you to this specific career path?

Well, in may 2014 I was working as a truck driver and we had a week where there really wasn’t much work to do.

So I sat hour by hour in that truck waiting for something to happened when I came over this advert about the Smule Karaoke App.

Figured I would try that, as I would usually sing along  to the radio all day Anyway..

After a few days of doing some horrible recordings, and then seeing how I improved time after time – that got me hooked, didn’t it? haha..

After 4 years on the app, and after numerous comments about how I should probably advance to making my own music, it was getting more and more like a dream for me to write and perform my own songs.

In the spring of 2018 I was signed up to this guitar course, and the main goal about the course was to learn simple guitar chords, and to make a song using them.

The guitar teacher was a music producer and artist himself, and little by little my goal was shifting from making a song to getting his help to record “Still”.

June 1st 2018 I released “Still” as my debut single, and I haven’t looked back ever since.

Can you share the most interesting story that happened to you since you started doing this?

Autumn 2018 my employer told me he had to cut down on staffs and I had to apply for new work. As much as I liked truck driving, it didn’t give me much time for family, friends and working with music, so I realized I wanted to try something else. Could I get a 9 to 5 job?

I was attending one of these «get a new job» courses, and all I could think of was that I wanted to do music full time, but I was nowhere able to since I didn’t have a studio on my hands. Among the 20 others on the course, there was a guy who had a $250 000 studio, but nothing to produce. We met, we talked, and we both quit the course and have been doing music together since. We both went back to our old lines of work, so no changes there.. haha

Which tips would you recommend to your colleagues in your industry to help them to thrive and not “burn out”?

Keep your heart in your music and do what you feel is best for you.

None of us are able to achieve success without some help along the way. Is there a particular person who you are grateful towards who helped get you to where you are? Can you share a story?

In all fairness, there are loads of people to be thankful for when doing music, but I’d have to say the biggest thanks to the Smule Singing app, for opening a new world for me; moving me from closet singer to actually exploring every aspect of my voice and musicality. And obviously my family for sticking out with me, and being supportive during the countless days of ups and downs in my music career so far. And Tom. Let’s not forget Tom. Remember that guy from the work course? Yeah, that’s him. Tom from Fake World Studios has endured hours of hours trying to adapt me from a closet singer to the singer I am today. I will be forever thankful for his help in understanding my talent, and the music I get to make with him.

How have you used your success to bring goodness to the world?

I might not have had the success as the artists on the biggest labels yet, but I am very proud of the achievements I have got on my own.

During my success I always make sure to pay respect for those who are at the place I was yesterday.

Do you have a favorite “Life Lesson Quote”? Can you share a story of how that was relevant to you in your life?

“You just can’t let life happen to you, you have to make life happened.” – Idowu Koyenikan

For years I was hoping for labels to suddenly knock at my door, but that never happened. I changed my ways – published music, focused on my social media, and boom. Labels started calling.
