What I love about this song is that it combines so many different influences under one roof, going for a fun and diverse feel. The guitar in the verses, with their darker chorus and echo effects, almost remind me of some of Nirvana’s quieter tracks, such as Come As You Are or Lithium. However, the great vocal melodies and the massive layered harmonies in the choruses really remind me of artists such as Bon Jovi as well as Bryan Adams or John Cougar Mellencamp, only to mention a few. What makes Candre’s song special is that it seamlessly combine personable lyrics with some edgy sound. Like many iconic Scandinavian artists, Candre has a great taste for good melodies, and this is something that especially comes through in the hooks.
From ABBA, to The Ark, to The Hives and even harder rockers like In Flames, I can think of so many Scandinavian artists who understand the important of a good melody and a catchy hook. Candre definitely belongs to this category, as “Through Heaven’s Gate” has a vocal hook that’s instantly recognizable, and it also plays a nice contrast with the song’s verses. While the verses are generally a bit more laid-back, the refrains are so much more open, giving the track a unique vibe that’s instantly satisfying and very energetic. In addition to that, the song is technically well-recorded and the production is amazing, which also helps to give the track a lot of definition and power. Great sound is not always the most important part, but it sure helps here!
